Coatings suppliers sell this as an off-the-shelf product. SBL Coatings lists a “UV clear glossy for ABS” as its own SKU, and BERLAC sells a dual-cure UV clear coat for plastics that hardens without a long thermal bake. This is standard industrial kit. It’s what produces that deep, wet-look shine.

Thickness matters more than most people assume. A thin pass leaves the plastic grain visible underneath, so the surface reads warm and slightly grippy. A heavy pass reads cool, hard, and mirror-like. Premium brands tune this deliberately. Piano finish sits at the thick end of the range and signals quality, right up until there’s too much of it, at which point the device starts to feel like a rental-car dashboard.

Getting the finish right on a beauty-device housing is a solved but finicky problem. JBR Plastics documents it in a case study on a high-gloss ABS mold with UV coating for a facial cleanser housing. The mold gets polished first, because no clear coat hides sink marks or flow lines in a rough part.

Matte on the Grip Is a Decision, Not a Default

Turn the device over. The surfaces your fingers actually touch are usually matte. The contrast isn’t decoration.

Matte ABS does four jobs at once. It feels warmer than gloss. It grips when your hands are slightly damp, which is exactly how you hold an IPL in a bathroom. It hides fingerprints, so the device still looks clean in week six. And it reads soft, a quiet signal that this thing is meant for skin contact. Consumer research keeps landing on the same finding: gloss, texture, and colour shift how people judge a product before they’ve used it.

The material matters here. Body shells are almost always ABS, for sound reasons. But not all ABS is equal. The grade, the mold polish, and the finishing process decide whether the final part feels like a device or a toy.

Metallic Accents Add Weight You Never Lift

Silk’n, Sensica, and RoseSkinCo all mix metallic elements into their shells. A brushed ring here, a satin insert there. Rarely real aluminum. Usually plated or filmed ABS.

It’s a trick, and it works. Metal reads durable even when the part weighs almost nothing. A thin metallic ring around the flash window makes the whole device feel more precise, more engineered. It costs a few cents a unit and buys a perception worth real money.

These Are Regulated Devices, Which Is Why the Details Matter

Why does this matter for materials? A device that has to pass a 510(k) and survive years of bathroom humidity and the occasional drop on tile is held to a different finishing standard than a $40 impulse buy. These brands aren’t putting UV coats and polished tooling on for fun. They’re doing it because the product has to look like what it costs, and keep looking that way.
