What full-process development actually means
A brand usually comes to us with a sketch and a market in mind, but not a date they can trust.
Full-process means we own everything between that handoff and mass production. Structure, hardware, software, tooling, certification, trial production. The brand reviews at defined gates; we carry the schedule.
That ownership is what makes a quantified timeline possible. If a brand stitches together five vendors, nobody owns the gaps between them. We own the whole chain, so we can date every stage before the project starts.
Why the form factor drives the schedule
The standard handheld IPL wand is a solved product. The enclosure and the thermal budget are known quantities, which is exactly why every listing looks the same.
A brand that wants to stand out needs a different shape. A desktop unit with a bigger treatment window and more power. A gun-style handle that stays comfortable at odd angles. Any form factor that isn’t a wand forces new structure, new cooling, and new safety margins that have to be re-verified rather than assumed.
That re-verification is the real cost of a new concept. You don’t get to copy a thermal design you’ve shipped before. You prove it again. A good schedule makes room for that instead of pretending it’s free.

Where the 253 days actually go
Most of the timeline lives in two places.
Certification took 124 days. Prototype development took 59. Tooling, which never shows up on a standard stage list, took another 31. Everything else — kick-off, EVT, DVT, golden sample, PVT, and the production ramp — fits into the remaining 39 days.
Read that again. Nearly half the project is certification, and it starts late because it waits on the life test.
The long pole is certification: 124 days
Ask any brand what scares them about a new beauty device and you get the same answer. Certification.
On this project it ran 124 days. Inside that window:
- Performance, transport-packaging, and software tests were due by January 8.
- The life test (the reliability run) didn’t finish until January 29.
- Third-party inspection and testing closed on May 1.
The stretch between January 29 and May 1 is where schedules die. Most of it is waiting on an external lab, not engineering. If we hadn’t booked the certification body during the design-input stage, those months would have pushed mass production past the client’s launch date.
How long does IPL device certification take? Budget four months, and book the lab early. The life test alone takes weeks, and the third-party report can’t start until it finishes.
Tooling: the stage that isn’t on the list
You’ll notice tooling is missing from the stage list. It’s invisible in most timelines, but the schedule accounted for it. Between DVT (November 20) and the golden sample (December 21) sat 31 days of mold fabrication.
Molds are the classic hidden dependency. No molds, no golden sample. No golden sample, no certification samples. On this project tooling gated the trial run, which gated the certification samples.
What most brands get wrong
Four things, in our experience.
First, they under-budget certification. Teams plan the PCB and the enclosure down to the day, then scribble “certification: 3 weeks” at the end. It’s never three weeks. It’s four months, and the clock doesn’t start until the life test finishes.
Second, they sequence it backward. Plenty of brands assume you certify before you build the golden sample. This project ran the other way: golden sample and PVT on December 21–25, certification from December 28 to May 1. You need real samples to certify, so you build first.
Third, they change the spec mid-flight. The prototype stage (59 days) swells whenever the concept drifts after kick-off. A frozen spec on day one is worth more than overtime later.
Fourth, they forget tooling exists. A mold carries a four-to-five-week lead time and sits in the critical path, so it cannot wait until the design is done.
Can this go faster?
Yes, in two places.
The prototype stage compresses when the client freezes the spec on day one. A chunk of that time wasn’t design work; it was revisions after the spec drifted mid-flight.
Certification only shortens if the lab is booked before you need it. There’s no engineering shortcut for a life test.
