The user isn’t complaining — they’re pretty happy with the result. What they want to know is what actually happened biologically, and whether the follicles are gone for good.

In the hair removal device business, one of the most asked questions is whether waxing can permanently remove hair. This post puts the question right on the table. My judgment: this result is more likely to correspond to follicular miniaturization, or an abnormally extended resting phase — or possibly structural damage that was simply too severe. The follicle dying outright is a very low probability.

Let me first separate two things. An “accidental permanent” and an “engineered permanent” are two different things. And not seeing hair regrow is not the same as the follicle being biologically dead — yet the two get mixed together all the time.

Waxing Is Officially Temporary Hair Removal, but Trauma Is Still Trauma

Waxing is classified in official terms as a temporary hair removal method, and that statement isn’t wrong. At the same time it hides a biological fact.

Repeated or forceful physical epilation causes cumulative follicular damage.

For most people, that damage is limited. Hair grows back — maybe slower, maybe finer. Over time, certain areas look sparser.

But only two sessions, followed by a full year with no regrowth — that is not a normal result. It strongly suggests the follicular structures responsible for restarting growth were disrupted far beyond what the ordinary hair growth cycle can explain.

Why Two Waxing Sessions Could Produce Such a Dramatic Result

To understand this case, you have to take waxing out of the “beauty treatment” frame and look at it at the follicle level.

Waxing Pulls Out More Than Surface Hair

A razor cuts the hair shaft at the skin surface and never touches inside the follicle. Waxing is far cruder: it forcibly rips the hair out of the follicle, possibly taking the subcutaneous bulb and attachment structures along with it.

Mechanical Trauma Triggers Inflammation, Miniaturization, and Shutdown

This is the core mechanism, and it’s fundamentally different from IPL or laser. Waxing works by mechanical tearing, followed by localized inflammation — and the inflammation can alter the follicle’s ability to re-enter active growth. The whole process runs on a completely different track from the controlled photothermal damage of IPL and laser.

Once dermal papilla function drops below a certain threshold, three outcomes become possible.

From the outside, the three outcomes can look identical. Biologically, they are three different things.

Is the More Likely Result Permanent Loss, or Will It Eventually Regrow?

If I have to take a side, I’d say this result is closer to durable loss, or close to durable inactivation. Ordinary delayed regrowth is far less likely.

Why does ordinary regrowth hold up worst? A normal telogen delay usually doesn’t stretch to a full year. Once the timeline runs that long, the case for substantive follicular damage is far more credible than a simple cycle delay.

One caveat here. Some follicles may still be alive, just growing hairs so small, so light, or so sparse that the user reads the area as completely hair-free. Without careful examination, that difference often goes unnoticed.

What the Dermatology Literature Says

Dermatology literature has long acknowledged something consumer marketing tends to avoid.

Repeated follicular damage can permanently reduce hair growth, at least in some users.

Waxing is nowhere near a reliable permanent hair removal method. What the literature concedes is only this: follicular trauma is biologically real.

The same principle was verified on the scalp long ago. So this Reddit user’s follicles may well have crossed that line, and visible terminal hair can’t grow back normally. But that doesn’t make waxing a clever strategy. It’s an accidental outlier.

For Long-Term Hair Reduction, Waxing Is a Trap

At this point I have to be direct. If your goal is long-term hair reduction that’s reliable, predictable, and scientifically grounded, waxing is the wrong tool.

Waxing Is Designed for Temporary Results

Its intended outcome is a few weeks of smooth skin. That’s what the waxing business runs on, and it’s the biological expectation too. Any more durable effect is incidental — it’s not in the design.

The Long-Term Outcome Is Uncontrollable

Different users get very different results. Most just grow back normally, or a bit slower. Some grow back unevenly in patches. Ingrown hairs pop up; folliculitis and skin irritation can follow; pigment changes aren’t unusual either. In rare cases there’s extended dormancy or practical inactivation. The outcome is random — there’s no precision to it.

IPL Is the More Rational Choice

If the goal is durable reduction, IPL is the more rational path. I’ll state my bias up front — coming from me, this sounds like I’m pitching my own product. The basis is the mechanism, and the mechanism holds up on this point.

IPL works by selective photothermolysis. It targets the melanin in follicles and applies controlled thermal damage to the structures involved in future growth. The process is gradual, measurable at every step, and repeatable. Compared to hoping repeated waxing happens to damage the right follicles, it’s vastly more predictable.

Waxing still has its use as a short-term grooming method. It just can’t serve as a serious permanent hair removal strategy.

Conclusion

This user got, from two waxing sessions, a result many people normally need multiple light-based treatments to achieve. But it came from uncontrolled physical trauma — a process that is neither safe nor predictable.

A full year without visible leg hair strongly points to one of three explanations: the follicles may be severely miniaturized, in long-term dormancy, or near-permanently stopped from producing visible terminal hair. None of the three is enviable. They can’t be replicated on demand, and the risk isn’t small. As for whether waxing is an underrated permanent hair removal method — these results provide no evidence for it.
